Scholarships are for undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in the College of Science. Some scholarships are not awarded every year and amounts vary from year to year. It may be hepful if you review our scholarship guidelines as you prepare your application.
Please note that only one application is needed; the system will determine which criteria you meet and automatically submit you to relevant scholarships. The deadline is February 15, 2019.
To deserving Oregon students who are not active in intercollegiate athletics. Established by a bequest from the estate of Jennie L. Williams.
Recognizes two College of Science students annually who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine.
To outstanding pre-medical students with junior or senior standing. Established by Dr. Amy Chadburn (Zoology, '79).
To support a sophomore, junior or senior pre-medical or pre-dental student in the College of Science. Established by Bev (OSU '52) and Dick (OSU '51) Chadburn.
To a junior or senior who shows academic promise in the College of Science. Established by June Seeley Copson (OSU 1915), in memory of her husband, Godfrey V. Copson (OSU 1911), formerly head of the Department of Microbiology.
To a junior or senior in the Department of Mathematics or Physics, who has shown good character, promise in scholarship, and general scientific aptitude. Established in memory of Paul Copson by his mother, June Copson (OSU 1915).
To a junior or senior in the College of Science with a demonstrated interest in cells, their function and their role in the development and life of organisms. Students demonstrating financial need will be considered. Preference is given first to students in Integrative Biology. Established by John and Gretchen Morris.
To a junior pursuing a health-related profession; must have at least a 3.25 GPA. Funded by The Corvallis Clinic in honor of Dr. James Riley, an OSU alumnus and one of the founders of The Corvallis Clinic.
To students majoring in any life sciences or discipline with an aptitude for research and interest in human health. Established by Frances Cripps, a generous supporter of students in the College of Science.
To benefit an exceptional student enrolled in the College of Science. Established by Karen and Kenneth Jones (OSU '80).
To support pre-dental students in the College of Science. This scholarship was established by Dr. Bill Ten Pas and ODS Companies in 2003.
To students studying a field of science related to ecology, showing high scholastic achievement, and with financial need.
To a student showing financial need and majoring in the natural sciences, including pre-professional health and teaching programs. Francois “Doc” Gilfillan was Dean of the College of Science from 1938 to 1962. A highly respected leader, “Doc” played a key role in the early development of the College of Science. This scholarship was established to commemorate his life by one of his students, Dr. Anton Postl, who had a long career at Western Oregon University.
To support deserving junior or senior students in Pre-Medicine. Selection is based on scholarship and financial need. Established by Dr. Augustin Gombart, a physician in Roseburg, and his wife Rita.
To support a senior preparing for medical school with at least a 3.75 GPA and financial need. Established by Abigail Haberman (OSU '84), who received scholarship awards while at OSU.
To students who show high scholarship, potential for success, unimpeachable character, and service to the University. Jesse Hanson was an OSU professor of Poultry Science from 1911-1966.
To undergraduate students in chemistry or biochemistry or related fields who show exceptional academic achievement and leadership, and demonstrate the potential for promising careers in science. Established by friends, former scholarship recipients, and family to honor the memory of Milton Harris (OSU 1926), an eminent scientist, philanthropist, innovator, entrepreneur, and friend of OSU.
To a science student with an outstanding love of learning, at least a 3.25 GPA, and at least 15 credits completed at OSU. This award was established in memory of the Heitmeyers.
To an outstanding student studying marine biology. This award was established in 1975 in memory of Cyril Robert “Bob” Herrick, a high school student who had hoped to pursue a career in Marine Biology.
To an outstanding sophomore or junior woman in the College of Science. Established by faculty and friends to honor the Hornes’ support of women and minority faculty and students. Fred Horne was Dean of the College of Science from 1986 to 2000. Clara Horne was Head Advisor in the College of Business.
To a pre-dental student involved in the Pre-dental Society at OSU. This scholarship commemorates Dr. Johnson’s long dentistry career in Corvallis and his involvement with the OSU pre-dental students.
To support promising junior and seniors in biology, botany, chemistry, earth sciences or zoology who demonstrate high scholarship. Chuck (OSU '63) and Kay Merrill, along with their daughter Lisa and son-in-law Lee Sickler (OSU '90) support generous scholarships through their family foundation.
To outstanding pre-dental students. Established to honor Mike O’Brien, founder of O’Brien Dental Lab. OSU maintains close ties to the lab, giving pre-dental students the opportunity to gain significant experience and a better understanding of dentistry.
To support a sophomore, junior, or senior pre-medical student showing some financial need. Dr. George Porter (OSU '53) was an Emeritus Professor of Medicine following a distinguished career at OHSU.
To a sophomore or junior pursuing a degree in the Life Sciences demonstrating involvement and leadership in extracurricular activities and an aptitude for research. Established by Commander Elizabeth Reeves.
To undergraduate students at Oregon State University enrolled in a major within the life sciences and/or graduate students in statistics. Students must be U.S. citizens with a current mailing address in southern California.
To a College of Science student chosen from the departments of chemistry, physics, microbiology or mathematics. Established by Gary Runes in recognition of his aunt, Sally Runes-Hicks and her belief in the value of education. (Administered by OSU Office of Financial Aid.)

To outstanding students in any science major.
This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in a major in the College of Science, who have demonstrated academic achievement, have transferred to Oregon State University from an Oregon Community College and are dedicated to a career in Science.
To outstanding pre-dental students who show promise of exceptional careers in dentistry.
To outstanding pre-dental students who show promise of exceptional careers in dentistry. Dr. Ryan Sparks practices dentistry in Corvallis.
To support a pre-dental student in the College of Science. Established by Dr. Jeffery (OSU 1983) and Kimberly Spathas (OSU '83).
To both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in science or mathematics, with a 3.5 GPA, and preferably who has lived in or is related to persons living in China. Established in honor of Dr. Chung Kwai Lui Wei and Mr. Hsin Hsu Wei, both of whom who emigrated from China. Dr. Wei was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. from Oregon State University.
To undergraduate pre-medical students who have received notification of admission to an accredited medical school. Selection is based on scholarship, financial need, and extracurricular activities.
To graduating pre-medical students who have been accepted for admission to an accredited medical school. Selection is based on scholarship, financial need, and personal qualities. This scholarship is in memory of Dr. Ralph Bosworth, a long-time friend of OSU and team physician for the Athletic Department for many years.
Below are scholarships available to students from specific academic departments. Scholarship numbers and amounts vary from year to year. Please direct questions to individual departments.
To outstanding juniors or seniors in Biochemistry/Biophysics with preference given to students showing interest in cancer research.
To a junior or senior in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics who has demonstrated ability and has a desire for a career in science research. This scholarship was established by the children of Professor MacDonald to honor him on the occasion of his retirement from the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.
To support an outstanding student in Biochemistry and Biophysics. Established by Carollee Woodstock (OSU '81).
Awarded to first, second, or third year Chemistry majors with the Chemistry Education option. The ACS-Hach Undergraduate Chemistry Teacher Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry with the Chemistry Education option in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement. Recipients must be citizens of the United States or permanent residents, enrolled as full-time Chemistry majors with a commitment to become a chemistry teacher, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. The scholarship is renewed annually provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time as a chemistry major, maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater and notifies the Honors and Awards Committee of their desire that the renewal be granted. Undergraduate students are limited to three one-year awards. A special one-year renewal is available to students enrolled full-time in the OSU MS in Science Education program provided they maintain a GPA of 3.0 greater and notify the Honors and Awards Committee of their desire that the renewal be granted. Financial need may be considered, but is not a requirement.
To juniors or seniors in the Department of Chemistry with at least a 3.0 GPA. Peter B. Culter (OSU '59) was the first scientist to detect radiation over the US from the Chernobyl reacter explosion, and contributed to the use of radiation physics in the detection of rare birth defects. This scholarship was established by Mr. Culter’s family to commemorate his life.
Established in honor of Carroll DeKock, a member of the Department for more than 30 years, chair for 14 years and inspirational teacher in the general chemistry program until his retirement in Spring 1999. Awarded to first- and second-year students. The Carroll W. and Gerry A. DeKock Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in Chemistry. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science with either sophomore or junior standing in chemistry while receiving the scholarship and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater. Financial need may be considered, but is not a requirement.
For chemistry majors who show exceptional scholastic achievement in chemistry, leadership, and demonstrate the potential for a promising career in science.
For a chemistry student going into their junior year, who has been a full time student at OSU the previous year. Preference given to students with demonstrated financial need, who can benefit from reducing the need to work to focus on scholarship and possibly research in their upper division years. This scholarship was established by Dr. Ingle's family and has received support from his former students.
To honor the memory of Keith McKennon a scholarship for undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
To a full-time senior majoring in chemistry, with a 3.5 GPA or higher and demonstrated potential for a successful career in chemistry.
Established by Colleen Spurgeon (BS '84) who was also a scholarship recipient. Awarded to first, second, or third year students. The Colleen Spurgeon Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to an undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry. The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater.
To full-time students majoring in zoology who show promise as a scholar, scientist, or teacher in the field of zoology.
To full-time undergraduate students in Zoology with an interest in terrestrial vertebrates or marine species.
To deserving students in the Department of Mathematics from the estate of Joan Eross, the mother of Botond Gabor Eross.
To a junior or senior majoring in mathematics or computer science who expresses the desire to work in the field of mathematics or computer science following graduation and who demonstrates financial need. Awarded in alternate years by the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science. Dr. Goheen was a professor in mathematics, and later in computer science from 1955 until his retirement in 1980. He served as faculty advisor to the Black Student Union and was active in the local chapter of the NAACP.
To benefit an undergraduate mathematics major. Established by the family of Edward H. Stockwell in recognition of his interest in mathematics and mathematics education.
To a deserving student in environmental microbiology. Established by family and friends in honor of T.R. Aspitarte (OSU, MS '53, Ph.D., '59).
To an outstanding junior or senior in microbiology.
To an outstanding junior majoring in microbiology demonstrating potential for a career in public health microbiology. The scholarship was endowed by the Public Health Microbiology Charitable Trust to honor Eleanor Ford’s (OSU '62) career in public health.
To an undergraduate microbiology student in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 GPA; women given first consideration. Helen Hays (OSU '56) was an undergraduate adviser and instructor in microbiology as well as having a long history of association with the Department of Microbiology.
To outstanding junior or senior microbiology majors who are also performing undergraduate research projects.
To an outstanding junior student majoring in microbiology, to be chosen by the scholarship committee with recommendations from advisors, instructors, and faculty. Established by students, friends, and colleagues in honor of the Overholser’s retirement in 1992.
To worthy and promising students in microbiology. Established by the widow and friends of the late Professor Joseph E. Simmons, formerly head of the Department of Microbiology.
Established in 2005 to commemorate the life of Kathryn Tinnesand. The recipient should be participating in undergraduate research and demonstrating promise and enthusiasm for research in science.
For Juniors and Seniors majoring in Physics with a 3.0 or higher, preference given to students with demonstrated financial need, who can benefit from reducing the need to work to focus on scholarship.
Established in 2005 by Kenneth S. and Paula D. Krane. Preference will be given to junior or senior level physics students; students must be full-time.
To full-time undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Physics. Dr. Nicodemus was a successful physicist and Dean of the Faculty from 1966 until his retirement in 1986. He was recognized for his inspiration and dedication to students and colleagues.
Provides scholarships for undergraduate physics majors.
To sophomores, juniors, or seniors in pre-veterinary medicine on the basis of character, scholarship, and need. From a bequest by Dora Krueger. (Apply through the OSU Department of Animal Sciences.)
