In the 2017-18 school year, the College of Science awarded scholarships to 223 students totaling more than $906,000 for merit, need and undergraduate research scholarships at Oregon State. College of Science scholarships are funded through the generous philanthropic support from alumni and friends who are eager to invest in your future. Our College is deeply committed to making a science education accessible. It is an important part of our mission to invest in the most promising students as we build the next generation of scientists.

Thanks to the generous support of alumni and friends, the College was able to award a total of 307 college and departmental scholarships and summer research fellowships from among 680 applicants this year.  These scholarship recipients are an impressive and diverse group:

  • 58% are women
  • 30% also enrolled in the Honors College
  • 46% (103) are minority students
  • 65% also work during the academic year, nearly 10% work more than 20 hours per week
  • 28% are first-generation college students

Scholarships and awards are available for College of Science students thanks to the generous support from alumni and friends of the College. All students are encouraged to apply for scholarships. We don't just want you to attend Oregon State, we want to see you thrive here. We offer scholarships based on many attributes from GPA, need, potential, major and more!

The list below is not an exhaustive list of all possible scholarships. But once you apply for scholarships in science, you will be considered for awards based on the guidelines for the scholarship.

How to apply?

Only one application is necessary to be considered for all scholarships in the College of Science. You can submit ONE application to be considered for more than 250 scholarship opportunities. It's that simple. The process takes just about two hours to complete. But reward could be $1,000-7,000 or more of scholarship money to help pay for your tuition next year. What have you got to lose?

Scholarships are awarded based on specific eligibility criteria, including academic excellence. Some scholarships are also designated for students with the highest levels of financial need.

Scholarships will be awarded in early May and effective for the 2018-19 academic year. Awards are given based on available funds and amounts vary year to year.

University scholarships for science students

Current and incoming College of Science students received a record-breaking total of more than $7.5 million in scholarships in 2017-18. These awards include support from OSU, the College of Science and its departments. This amount has tripled since 2015-16.

Our students received the second highest amount of scholarship funding at OSU. Nearly $5 million for 1,344 scholarships were awarded to returning College of Science students. The remaining scholarships were offered to 570 incoming/new students, including nine who received Presidential Scholarships. More than half of our incoming class of 2021 received some type of scholarship support. In total, 570 new students received about $2.6 million in scholarships, with some students receiving multiple awards.

SURE Science:  Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Science

A competitive scholarship for undergraduates who wish to engage in a summer research experience.

How will you spend your summer? Working an odd job at home…..or conducting invasive species research on lionfish in the Caribbean? The College of Science’s SURE Science program offers scholarships for undergraduate students seeking a stimulating summer research experience to complement their academic experience. Take advantage of hundreds of summer research opportunities to work alongside faculty for an engaging, hands-on learning experience.

Make a difference this summer by applying what you’ve learned in the classroom. You can gain valuable insight into the creation of knowledge and develop a mentoring relationship with a professor. By actively participating in research, you can get the experience you need to prepare for medical or graduate school or to enhance your resume and qualifications.  Last year students worked alongside faculty in areas such as:

  • Biosensor research developing a portable, at-home kidney test
  • Biophysics manipulating highly focused laser beams using holographic optical tweezers to move microscopic objects
  • Marine studies exploring dead zones in coastal marine waters to understand their impacts on ecosystems and people

Thanks to the generous philanthropic support of the College of Science friends, alumni and the community through the Undergraduate Research Frontiers Fund, the SURE Science program offers students the opportunity to foster meaningful, scholarly connections early in their academic careers.
